Americas, Bolivia, Environmental Issues, 2013

Kathelyn Paredes Villanueva is a biotechnology and dendrochronology researcher at Gabriel René Moreno University/Wageningen University, and is currently engaged in research to find suitable tools, such as DNA and stable isotopes methods, for forest management and control systems, particularly as they pertain to illegal logging and tracing timber origin. Through her previous work Paredes has gained experience in sustainable forest management and learned to use diverse software as decision making tools. During her fellowship in the U.S., Paredes worked at Forest Trends in Washington, DC, analyzing the trade trends from Latin American countries to China, as the latter has played a major role in the world forestry market. This process gave her more understanding of the market flow, helping her identify potential areas to be strengthened in Bolivia and where decision making should be addressed. Having returned from the Community Solutions Program, she supports the implementation of sustainable forest management and develops ways to stop illegal logging in Bolivia.
