Iassen Lazarov is a Research Expert at the Institute for Public Environment Development in Bulgaria, where he develops strategies to implement new digital tools and technologies that can potentially increase the transparency and accountability of the Bulgarian public sector. Lazarov administers most of the Institute’s digital tools, including online mapping software and a website that serves as a platform to investigate corruption within government institutions. Lazarov is also conducting research on the correlation of media freedom and electoral legislation in ten European countries. While in the U.S., Lazarov worked at the Center for Responsive Politics in Washington, DC, where he served as a researcher on the organizational team, gaining knowledge of the political funding process in the U.S. and proposing strategies that helped to develop technologies which enable citizens to demand more accountability from public. Upon returning to Bulgaria, Lazarov developed an online platform for civic understanding and engagement in Bulgaria at a national level.
