Africa, Zimbabwe, Environmental Issues, Transparency and Accountability, 2011

Gilbert Makore is currently the Coordinator of Publish What You Pay Zimbabwe, a coalition of 10 civil society and community based organizations working to promote a more open and transparent mining sector in Zimbabwe, so as to ensure that the country's mineral resources result in broad based socio-economic development. Makore has led the coalition on campaigning for the adoption and implementation of the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative; the reform of the mining legal and policy framework so as to strengthen principles of transparency and protection of community rights; and advocacy for the full and mandatory disclosure of mining contracts and revenues. While in the U.S, he worked with Pacific Environment in Anchorage, Alaska, conducting research and assessments on the threats and possibilities of coal mining in Alaska. Upon his return to Zimbabwe, Makore focused on creating an online platform that provides information on extractives in Zimbabwe in order to foster greater dialogue on mining and transparency and accountability in Zimbabwe.
