Alex Lawoko currently works as a volunteer Chairperson with the Gulu Deaf Association, as well as Treasurer and Member of the Board of Directors at the Uganda National Association of the Deaf (UNAD) and National Union of Disabled Persons of Uganda (NUDIPU) Youth wing. He is an expert in the areas of rural deaf community mobilization, gender inclusion, and fundraising for deaf groups. While in the U.S., he worked with Westchester Disabled on the Move, Inc. (WDOM) in Yonkers, New York, where he attended community economic development meetings and trainings, presented at WDOM’s Spirit of Independence Gala, and interviewed people with disabilities, service providers, and advocates to learn of their efforts in community economic development and advocacy for disadvantaged individuals. Upon returning to Uganda, Lawoko concentrated his efforts on training deaf women and men in economic empowerment for self-reliance by providing seed capital in the form of materials and training.
