Pop-Up Schools

Pop-Up Schools

Overview

In response to the urgent need for safe, high-quality learning environments in war-affected communities, IREX introduced the Pop-Up School model—a fast, cost-effective, and community-driven solution to restore access to education. IREX installs Pop-Up Schools—modular structures that can be produced and installed quickly—in communities where schools have been damaged or destroyed, ensuring children in the communities most impacted by the war can return to school, and providing valuable community gathering spaces in areas where much of the infrastructure has been destroyed.

Each Pop-Up School is supported by a tailored education recovery roadmap for restoring quality education services, which is developed in partnership with local authorities. IREX also provides mentorship and training to help communities manage the schools effectively. Local governments assume full oversight and financial responsibility for the operation and maintenance of Pop-Up Schools once they are installed, ensuring their sustained use and functionality.

Recognized by Ukraine’s Ministry of Education and Science, the Pop-Up School model is now being promoted as a blueprint for broader recovery efforts. It demonstrates how innovative, community-based solutions can restore not just education, but hope, stability, and opportunity in the face of crisis.

Quick Facts

  • Since 2023, IREX has established six Pop-Up Schools across Kyiv, Mykolayiv, and Dnipropetrovsk oblasts. These facilities have enabled nearly 1,900 students and over 220 teachers to return to in-person learning.
  • In communities where infrastructure is in ruins, Pop-Up Schools have also become community hubs—hosting psychosocial support, public meetings, and youth programming.
  • The durable modular structures are constructed entirely in Ukraine from locally-sourced materials and utilizing local workforce, thereby strengthening Ukraine’s economy and manufacturing capacity.
  • To support students’ academic recovery, IREX implemented a catch-up program in 21 schools, including in the Pop-Up Schools, reaching over 1,000 students. Over 80% of participants showed measurable academic improvement.

Goals

  • Restore access to quality education for Ukrainian students in war-affected communities
  • Equip teachers with trauma-informed curricula aimed at addressing education loss
  • Support the long-term recovery and resilience of war-affected communities
Our village was under occupation, and when retreating, Russian forces destroyed our school. It was heartbreaking—even my father, a proud graduate of our school, couldn’t hold back tears. We thought it was the end. But now, thanks to the pop-up school, we have a place to study again. My classmates are returning to the village. We can rebuild our lives here. Oksana, 9th grade student
