How the Sponsorship Process Works
About What IREX Provides How It Works Participant Support FAQ
The visa process can feel complex, especially if this is your first exchange program. IREX guides participants and host organizations through each step of J‑1 sponsorship, providing clarity, structure, and support along the way. Here’s what to expect.
Step 1: Identify the opportunity
The host organization and candidate define the proposed role, learning objectives, and category fit (Intern, Trainee, Research Scholar, Short‑Term Scholar, Professor, or Specialist).
Step 2: Submit application with key details
Share the program outline and participant and U.S. host information through IREX’s intake and application process. Intern/Trainee hosts will prepare a Training/Internship Placement Plan whereas hosts of other exchange visitor categories will prepare a letter of support using IREX’s template. Please contact us for a link to our secure online application portal and any templates needed.
Step 3: Sponsor review
IREX reviews eligibility and program structure and works with you to address any questions needed for approval. This stage takes between 2-3 weeks. Expedited review is available for an additional fee.
Step 4: DS‑2019 / DS-7002 issuance and visa application
After approval, IREX issues the DS‑2019 and provides guidance for next steps in the visa process.
Step 5: Program launch and ongoing support
The participant enters the United States and begins the program. IREX remains available throughout the exchange, including on-demand advising, SEVIS record updates, and 24/7 emergency support.
Fees vary by program visa category and duration and are paid during the application process. Feel free to reach out to IREX to request a quote.
