J-1 Visa Frequently Asked Questions
About What IREX Provides How It Works Participant Support FAQ
IREX supports exchange visitors and host organizations throughout each stage of the J‑1 visa process, from choosing the right category, to completing the application and training plan, to preparing for the visa interview, to maintaining visa related standards during the program. Below are answers to common questions to help you understand how J‑1 sponsorship works through IREX and where we can support you.
Q: Which J‑1 category is right for our role?
A: Category selection depends on a combination of the primary purpose of the visit (internship, structured training, teaching/lecturing, specialized knowledge exchange, research collaboration, etc.), desired length of U.S. program, and qualifications of the prospective exchange visitor. In some cases, prior J-1 participation will also impact eligibility for one or more categories. IREX can help assess fit across Intern, Trainee, Professor, Specialist, Research Scholar, and Short‑Term Scholar options. To get started, please reach out and share with us a summary of the proposed role and dates along with an intending participant’s CV.
Q: Can private‑sector companies host exchange visitors?
A: Yes! Many BridgeUSA categories allow exchange activity at a range of host organizations, including corporate settings, when the program is structured and aligned with the category’s purpose. The organization must require in-person work at least Keep in mind that IREX will collect a host application if the organization has not previously worked with us. Companies that have fewer than 25 full-time employees or less than $3 million annual revenue must have a site visit arranged by IREX as part of the process.
Q: What is the Training/Internship Placement Plan, and is it required for all J-1 visa holders?
A: Intern/Trainee programs require a formal, structured placement plan (using the U.S. government form “DS‑7002”). This will outline phases of the work-based learning experience, including learning objectives, progression of activities, plans for supervision, and other details. The Training Plan (DS-7002) must be agreed to by all parties (participant, U.S. host, and IREX) during the application stage and must be followed throughout the in-person internship/training visit (in some cases, the plan may be updated, but would require advanced approval by IREX and re-signing of all parties). The Training Plan (DS-7002) is not required for other J-1 categories besides Intern/Trainee. If you need help writing the Training Plan, please contact IREX and we can support you with this process and provide examples.
Q: Is insurance included in the sponsorship fee?
A: No. Sponsors are responsible for ensuring participants have health insurance coverage, but participants are responsible to arrange their enrollment and make related payments. IREX provides guidance on two pre-approved plans during the application process so participants can easily obtain compliant coverage.
