J-1 Intern & Trainee Sponsorship
OVERVIEW J-1 CATEGORIES INTERNS & TRAINEES HOW IT WORKS FAQs
Intern and Trainee programs are designed for structured, supervised work-based learning—not ordinary employment. IREX supports hosts, attorneys, advisors, and participants by helping them understand category requirements, prepare required documentation, and build a training experience that is aligned with BridgeUSA expectations.
Intern programs are generally best for current foreign university students or recent graduates seeking hands-on exposure to U.S. culture and business practices in their chosen occupational field for up to 12 months.
Trainee programs are generally best for early- to mid-career foreign professionals seeking guided, skills-based training in their occupational field for up to 18 months. Eligibility generally requires a degree plus at least one year of related work experience, or at least five years of experience without a degree.
Training plan guidance: Each Intern or Trainee and proposed U.S. host organization must develop and agree to a Training/Internship Placement Plan, also known as the DS-7002. The plan outlines objectives, phases, activities, supervision, and how the experience supports the participant’s background and professional goals.
