IREX is seeking people who are 18–29 years old in Mombasa County, Kenya, to participate in focus groups.

The focus groups will help us better understand the following topics:

  • What experiences youth (ages 18–29) have had with virtual gigs (short-term online work done virtually and remotely using a digital device—e.g., a computer or phone), including the types of opportunities they have completed, the skills they have used, their motivations, and the challenges or environmental factors that affect their experience.

  • What youth need in order to obtain consistent and compensated virtual gigs, including the types of opportunities they want, the skills they have or need, their motivations, and the challenges or environmental factors that affect their ability to find and secure virtual gigs.

Why are we conducting focus groups?

IREX, through its Center for Applied Learning and Impact (CALI), is researching, developing, and testing a skills development intervention that prioritizes a specific soft-skill needed for youth to succeed in obtaining decent and consistent virtual gig work in Kenya.

This initiative will leverage expertise in youth soft-skills development for virtual gig opportunities. Through the skills development intervention, IREX will determine what soft skills youth seeking virtual gig opportunities need in order to obtain more consistent and compensated work.
