Portia Dery has over three years' experience in community development and literacy work. In 2013 she dared to turn her passion for reading and writing into a social venture called the African Youth Writers Organization (AYWO), which designs innovative literacy solutions and products to improve the quality of literacy and ensure inclusive access for every child. She has directly mentored 1,050 children in reading and writeing. Portia currently works as a community development officer with the Department of Community Development and Social Welfare in a rural district, where she trains and empowers people with skills pertaining to gender advocacy, economic activities, literacy, and health. Portia's current innovative project is a literacy clinic called ‘The Funky ReadWrite Clinic’, which is drastically improving literacy skills of children. After completing the Fellowship, Portia will transfer and apply the skills learned into her work in order to improve activities and strengthen their financial sustainability.
