Olena Taranenko is a capacity building manager for IREX’s Learn to Discern in Education (L2D-Ed) program in Ukraine.

She is responsible for providing technical input and overseeing the adaptation of L2D training materials and curricula for pre- and in-service teacher training institutes in Ukraine. She also conducts and oversees trainings for beneficiaries to uphold standards and quality. Olena is an experienced trainer on media and information literacy, effective and interactive teaching methodologies, and training of trainers.

Prior to joining IREX, Olena worked as head of the journalism department in Vasyl’ Stus Donetsk National University. She is a media trainer in media and information literacy programs and projects for conflict-sensitive reporting, and author of research articles, study guides, and journalistic texts.

Olena was a speaker at scientific conferences in Poland, Germany, Moldova, and Armenia on the issues of journalism education, media literacy, and the problems of internally displaced persons. In 2018, she was a visiting professor at the Institute of Slavic Studies at the Dresden Technical University (media studios). She has extensive experience in higher education in Ukraine.

In 2016, 2017, and 2018, Olena received letters of commendation from the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine. Since 2017, she is a member of the Ukrainian Association of Media Psychologists and Media Educators.

Since March 2008, she is a member of the National Union of Journalists of Ukraine.

Olena is fluent in Ukrainian and Russian. She holds a master's degree in philology from the Donetsk State University. Olena has a PhD and she is an associate professor of journalism.
