Chris McKeown joined IREX in November 2018 as a Program Officer for the Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders.
In this role his primary focus is the Mandela Washington Fellowship Summit. In addition to the Summit and special programming, Chris supports alumni engagement efforts both domestically and in Africa.
Prior to joining IREX, he worked as an Assistant Director at the University of Maryland Robert H. Smith School of Business, Office of Executive Programs. While there he worked with various federal agencies to design and implement training and development programs, specializing in executive level leadership. Before that time Chris was running pre-college programs for middle and high school students while working in the Office of Extended Studies, also at the University of Maryland.
He is a Returned Peace Corps Volunteer having served in Kenya from 2008 – 2012 as a Small Enterprise Development Volunteer and is advanced in Kiswahili. He spent time developing an eco-tourism business, taught business studies at a secondary school, and helped set strategy for a local HIV/AIDs non-profit. He frequently travels back to the region and has family in both Kenya and South Africa.
Chris holds a Master of Public Policy degree in International Development and a BA in International Business from the University of Maryland-College Park.
