Unpacking Independence: The Question of Women’s Cultural and Social Independence in the Recently Declared Independent Montenegro (Research Brief)
This research focuses on the works of contemporary Montenegrin women and men writers and filmmakers and on the question of their different representation of female characters in the light of Montenegro’s recently declared independence.
My project asks how the question of independence has been framed in relation to the female characters in the recent Montenegrin literary and cinematic works both in terms of national independence and in terms of the possibility of women’s independence in the newly independent society. I examine and evaluate what unpacking of Montenegrin’s independence brings to its emerging women authors and their writing in order to arrive at a gender-specific understanding of its cultural and social dynamics and purport.
