Tatar Theater—Russian Empire: The Politics of Memory Making in Imperial Kazan (Research Brief)

 While a number of excellent Western works are available that study the dynamics of imperial politics toward Russia’s inorodtsy, the social and political meaning of the imperial frontier and the interaction it engenders, mine will be one of very few works examining the imperial encounter from the point of view of non- Russians. At the same time, while the works of Tatar historians have focused on various social and cultural problems of Tatar society in the early 20th century, too many ignore the complexity of Tatar national identity or allow early 20th century cultural and social discourse to define their analytical categories.
