Straddling Nation and Europe: Identity in Hungarian Foreign Policy (Research Brief)

Despite being passed virtually unanimously by the Hungarian parliament, it came under severe criticism by Slovakia, Romania, various European organizations, and eventually the Hungarian Socialist Party, which won the April 2002 elections. During my research trip, the Hungarian government radically revised the law, although this did not quell all of the controversy surrounding it. Most of my research consisted of learning about the objections to and the defense of the law by various actors as well as the role of domestic and international bodies in the process of changing the law.
