Markowitz The first question motivating my research was the following: why did Tajikistan’s state suddenly collapse into a five-year civil war (1992-97) while its counterpart in Uzbekistan has experienced gradual decline. What explains the varying rates and patterns of state breakdown in these seemingly very similar cases?
