I traveled to Bulgaria in from December 2003 to January 2004 to examine the underlying causes of the unusually high percentage of women in the Bulgarian parliament after the 2001 election of the National Movement of Simeon the II government headed by Bulgaria’s former king. I was interested to find out how and why this happened, whether it was intentional or coincidental, and what the affects on women’s legislation has been in the first two years of this government’s term.
