Global UGRAD Participant Bios (2011-12)

One-hundred-thirty fellows from 12 countries were selected for the 2011-2012 Global UGRAD Program in Eurasia and Central Asia. The 2011-2012 fellows were invited to submit an optional biography for publication. The submissions appear below.

ARMENIA

Ruzanna Boyakhchyan
Armenia

Ruzanna is from Spitak, Armenia and is studying for her bachelor’s degree at Yerevan State Linguistic University. As an active member of the community, Ruzanna volunteers at the Red Cross.  During her Global UGRAD fellowship, she hopes to learn about American social customs and conventions and  looks forward to celebrating Halloween.

Sona is originally from Yerevan, Armenia and is pursuing her bachelor’s degree in Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies at Yerevan State University.  In Armenia, she has been involved in a number of non-profit organizations and projects working on civil society development.  Her field of interests includes social media, human rights, conflict transformation and resolution, and non-formal education and training. Because Sona has been studying the general theory of religion and the history of major religions, she chose to take the course, “Religion in America” during the fall semester of her UGRAD fellowship.  She is looking forward to exploring religion in the United States to help her understand how diverse communities can coexist within a single society.  Sona is also looking forward to experiencing how American families celebrate Christmas.

Originally from Yerevan, Armenia, Meline is pursuing her bachelor’s degree in Linguistics and International Journalism at Yerevan State Linguistic University.  Her hobbies include travelling, meeting new people, studying different cultures, and learning new things.  Previously, Meline served on the student council at her university and interned at Casals and Associates, Inc. While in the United States, she hopes to learn about U.S. Literature and American culture.  Meline looks forward to becoming familiar with the rules of American football and celebrating Halloween and Thanksgiving.

Hayarpi is originally from Artashat, Armenia.  She is studying Political Science at Yerevan State Linguistic University.  Hayarpi has volunteered with a variety of groups and enjoys teaching English to children in Armenia.  During her Global UGRAD fellowship, Hayarpi hopes to learn more about the US government and American politics.  She is also looking forward to attending a Halloween party while in the United States.

Davit is pursuing his bachelor’s degree in Business at Armenian State University of Economics in his home city of Yerevan, Armenia.  Davit is on the student council and interned at ArmBusiness Bank this past summer.  During his Global UGRAD fellowship, Davit hopes to learn about American business, stock markets, and traditions.  In addition, he would love to experience an American rock concert and visit Hollywood, California.

Lusine is studying for her bachelor’s degree in Linguistics and Journalism at Yerevan State Linguistic University after V. Brusov in her home city of Yerevan, Armenia. Her hobbies include swimming, playing lawn tennis, listening to music, reading books and practicing Yoga.  While in the United States, Lusine plans to visit a number of places including New York, Las Vegas, and Los Angeles.  She also hopes she will have the chance to visit various museums, theaters, sporting events and concerts. 

 


AZERBAIJAN

Nargiz Guliyeva

Nargiz is pursuing her bachelor’s degree at the Azerbaijan University of Languages in her home city of Baku, Azerbaijan.  Her hobbies include reading and gathering rare postcards.  She interned at the Center for Strategic Studies under the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Azerbaijan Youth Euro-Atlantic Organization, specifically on the Legal Aid to Victims of Human Trafficking project.  During her Global UGRAD fellowship, Nargiz would like to learn more about U.S. foreign relations and looks forward to camping and celebrating Halloween.

Originally from Baku, Azerbaijan, Kamran is pursuing his bachelor’s degree in Air Traffic Control at the National Academy of Aviation of Azerbaijan.  He is an English Olympiad winner and a member of the aviation academy’s swimming team.  Kamran’s hobbies include art and playing the guitar.  While in the United States, he hopes to learn more about American government and culture.  Kamran is looking forward to playing hockey, camping, kayaking, and celebrating Christmas.

Zarifa is originally from Baku, Azerbaijan and is attending Azerbaijan International University.  She has volunteered in Cluj Napoca, Romania with kindergarten classes.  During her Global UGRAD fellowship, Zarifa hopes to learn about social security and American government policy.  She is looking forward to attending rock concerts while in the United States.

Originally from Baku, Azerbaijan, Sabina is pursuing her bachelor’s degree in International Relations at Baku Slavic University.  Sabina enjoys music, and graduated from the Musical High School with distinction in 2009, after studying piano.  She has also been involved in ballroom dancing for 7 years and participates in her university’s theater.  While in the United States for her Global UGRAD fellowship, Sabina hopes to learn more about international relations and improve her theatrical skills.  She is looking forward to participating in St. Cloud State’s “Cultural Café,” celebrating Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas, and attending world movie premieres.

Ilona’s major is Management in International Tourism at the Belarusian State University in her home city of Minsk, Belarus.  Back home, Ilona is quite active in her university.  Some of her activities include serving as president of the Scientific Student Council in the International Tourism Department at her University, participating in Model United Nations and being a member of the International Forum of Belarusian National Academy of Sciences.  While in the United States, Ilona hopes to learn about American History as well as experience holidays such as Thanksgiving and Christmas.  She also hopes to visit American museums, hike in national parks, and she’s especially interested in seeing the Grand Canyon.

 


GEORGIA

Ani is originally from Tbilisi, Georgia where she is studying for her bachelor’s degree in International Relations.  She is the head of the Education Department of the Tbilisi Youth Assembly and is the exchange program adviser at Young Georgians for Europe, a non-governmental organization.  In Georgia, Ani works as an editor in the production center of the television show “What?Where?When?”  During her Global UGRAD fellowship, Ani hopes to learn about America’s government and economic systems.  She is looking forward to celebrating Halloween with her friends at St. Cloud State University.

Originally from Batumi, Georgia, David is pursuing his bachelor’s degree in International Relations at Shota Rustaveli State University.  His hobbies include basketball, reading, cycling, and swimming.  David is the president of AIESEC Batumi Initiative Group and works on the organizing committee for the Georgia Business Group.  During his Global UGRAD fellowship, he hopes to learn about U.S. Politics and history.  David looks forward to going to concerts, playing games, participating in debate clubs, and celebrating Thanksgiving.

Salome is majoring in Medicine at Tbilisi State Medical University in her home city of Tbilisi, Georgia.  She is a member of the Student Government and is the head of the Neurology Department of the Student Scientific Association at the University. Salome worked as an international relations manager at the Batumi International Medical Summit (BIMS) in early 2011. While in the United States, she hopes to learn more about sociology and American democracy. Salome looks forward to spending Thanksgiving with her friendship family.

During his Global UGRAD fellowship, he hopes to learn about the American way of life and culture, in addition to American literature and the U.S. Constitution.  George looks forward to watching American sports, going to concerts, and celebrating Thanksgiving and New Years.

Mariam’s hometown is Gori, Georgia.  She is attending Tbilisi State University in Tbilisi, where she is studying banking and finance, and pursuing her bachelor’s degree in Business Administration.  Mariam has volunteered with the Georgian Ministry of Sport and Youth’s program, “We Help,” and she was active in teaching refugee children to play piano.  While in the United States, Mariam hopes to learn more about hospitality management.  She is looking forward to going to New York for New Year’s and going to Disney World.

Originally from Kostanai, Kazakhstan, Anzor is pursuing his bachelor’s degree in Translation Studies at Akhmet Baytursinov Kostanai State University.  As an active member of his community, he is a member of the American Corner Volunteer club. He volunteers at the local welfare fund "Podderjka" and with handicapped children at local orphanages.  While in the United States, Anzor hopes to learn more about the U.S. Constitution and its history and to experience the Iowa presidential caucuses.

Originally from Astana, Kazakhstan, Amina is studying International Relations at the Eurasian National University, named after L.N. Gumilev.  At her university, Amina has been very active, having participated in the Astana Toastmasters Club, the Astana Alumni Association, and a variety of university events, such as concerts and festivals.  During her Global UGRAD fellowship, Amina hopes to learn about the key principles of American domestic and foreign policy, US governmental structure, and legislation.  She is looking forward to celebrating American holidays, like Halloween and Thanksgiving, and attending festivals, concerts, musicals, and sporting events.

Ivan is enrolled at Kazakh Economics University named after T.Ryskulov, where he is pursuing his bachelor’s degree in Finance.  Originally from Almaty, Ivan is an active member of AIESEC, the largest international student driven organization in the world.  His hobbies include skating, hiking, and reading.  During his Global UGRAD fellowship, Ivan hopes to learn more about American financial management and looks forward to celebrating Halloween, Thanksgiving, and especially Christmas.  If possible, Ivan would also like to visit some of America’s greatest cities, such as Los Angeles and New York.

Dinara is originally from Astana, Kazakhstan, where she is studying Engineering at the S. Seyfullin Kazakh Agrotechnical University.  She was a volunteer for the Eurasian Energy Forum KAZENERGY in 2010 and for the 7th Asian Winter Games in 2011.  In high school, Dinara used to play Kazakhstan’s national instrument, the dombra, for significant occasions.  Dinara was a leader in her student English club, “Tea Time,” a member of the ACCELS English discussion group since 2008, and has participated in another English discussion group, American Corner Kazakhstan, since 2010.  She also has experience working as a real estate broker.  She is hoping to learn more about American history, especially details about European settlement in the US.  Dinara is looking forward to fulfilling her dream of celebrating New Year’s in New York City.

Originally from Almaty, Kazakhstan, Xeniya is studying Translation Studies at the University of Foreign Languages and Business Careers.  She received a DAAD scholarship to study in Germany for a summer, and has interned as a teacher at the Almaty International School and as a secretary at the Institute of Mathematics.  Xeniya has also served as an English tutor, manager at the International School of Economics and Social Sciences of the Kazakh-British Technical University, group monitor at her university, and operator of electronic databases and online registration with various companies.  During her time in the United States, Xeniya hopes to learn more about American History and is looking forward to attending an OleMiss American football game. 

 


KYRGYZSTAN

Originally from Osh, Kyrgyzstan, Dinara is pursuing her bachelor’s degree at the Kyrgyzstan-Turkey Manas University in Bishkek.  She is a member of her university’s choir and plays the violin.  Dinara worked with the foundation, "Youth of Osh," implementing different projects, and she was the leader of a project that worked to help impoverished children and orphans.  During her Global UGRAD fellowship, Dinara hopes to learn more about the American economy.  She is looking forward to celebrating American holidays, attending concerts, and visiting art galleries and museums.

Originally from Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, Aidai is pursuing her bachelor’s degree in Business Administration at American University of Central Asia.  She is a member of a number of different organizations and clubs, including the Debate Club at her university, Unity Fund, and the world’s largest student driven organization AIESEC.  Aidai’s hobbies include skiing, playing the Kyrgyz national instrument "Komuz,” meeting new people, and hanging out with friends.  During her Global UGRAD fellowship, she hopes to learn about American daily life, business management style, and celebrations.  Aidai looks forward to watching football games and celebrating Christmas.

Asel is enrolled at the Kyrgyz-Russian Slavic University where she is pursuing her bachelor’s degree in Journalism.  Originally from Bishkek, she is a member of the drama club and debate team at her university, and also interned at the U.S. Embassy in Bishkek.  While in the United States, Asel hopes to learn more about American journalism and advertising.  She looks forward to seeing the “Phantom of the Opera” and the Metropolitan Museum in New York City.  In addition, Asel would like to celebrate American holidays, visit famous Ivy League Colleges, and sunbathe in Miami Beach, Florida.

Samargul is originally from Osh City, Kyrgyzstan, where she attends Osh State University.  She is pursuing her bachelor’s degree at the School of Foreign Languages to become a linguist-interpreter.  At her university, Samargul was a member of the Youth Committee and course monitor for her classes.  She also volunteered with the Central Asian Alliance for Water.  During her Global UGRAD fellowship, Samargul is hoping to learn more about the US government.  She would like to join the basketball team in Mankato and is looking forward to site-seeing, going to concerts, and celebrating Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s while she is in the United States.

 


MOLDOVA

Originally from Chisinau, Moldova, Marina is studying General Medicine and pursuing a Doctor of Medicine degree at the State Medical and Pharmaceutical University "Nicolae Testemitanu" of the Republic of Moldova.  Marina worked as an English teacher and has held numerous positions with the American Council for International Education.  She has also been an active volunteer, teaching English, organizing events, and working closely with projects benefitting children.  Marina has done extensive work with orphans.  During her Global UGRAD fellowship, she is hoping to learn more about biomedical sciences and improve her lab and research skills.  Marina is looking forward to attending concerts and music festivals, and celebrating all of America’s holidays.

Originally from Moldova, Mihai is studying for his bachelor’s degree at Moldova State University.  Mihai is an active member of his community in Moldova and volunteers at charity organizations. He is his university’s prefect and a member of the youth parliament.  He looks forward to going to a Switchfoot Concert and celebrating Christmas in the U.S. this year.

Ecaterina is from Chisinau, Moldova and is studying Marketing at the Academy of Economic Studies of Moldova.  She has worked as an English teacher and has volunteered for a variety of Earth Day events, including different activities for children with disabilities.  In her free time Ecaterina loves playing sports and dancing.  She hopes to learn more about business and marketing during her Global UGRAD fellowship to help start her own business in the future.  While in the United States, Ecaterina is looking forward to participating in many cultural events, including going to football games, attending concerts, and celebrating Thanksgiving.

Anastasiia is originally from Tiraspol, Moldova, and is pursuing her bachelor’s degree in Medicine at Transnistria State University.  As an active member of her community in Ukraine, she volunteers her time at a local hospital and organizes groups to visit orphanages.  In her free time she practices yoga and makes toys.    While in the United States, Anastasiia hopes to learn about child psychology and looks forward to watching American football games.

During her Global UGRAD fellowship, Dorina would like to learn about American politics and government.  She hopes to have the chance to spend Christmas in New York City.

Originally from Chelyabinsk, Russia, Alina is studying for her bachelor’s degree in Organizational Management (with a minor in Linguistics and Translation Studies) at Chelyabinsk State University.  Alina interned as a translator with a few different organizations, such as GreenPeace Russia, the Crane Technologies Company, and Renaissance Life & Pensions.  During her Global UGRAD fellowship, she hopes to learn more about the U.S. political system, and U.S. non-profit and for-profit business organizations.  Alina looks forward to experiencing the CROP Hunger Walk and the Toledo symphony and opera.

Tamerlan is from Volgograd, Russia, where he is studying World Economy, Finance, and Financial Management at the Volgograd State University.  He has been active in student government and volunteering to preserve the environment.  Tamerlan also served as the ethnic interaction team leader and academic group monitor at his University.  During his Global UGRAD fellowship, Tamerlan is hoping to learn more about Native Americans and the US government.  He looks forward to celebrating Thanksgiving and Christmas, and watching American football, NHL hockey, baseball and basketball games.

Olga is from Usolye-Sibirskoye, Russia and is pursuing her bachelor’s degree in Theory and Methodology of Teaching Foreign Languages at Irkutsk State Linguistic University.  Her hobbies include reading, dancing, and practicing yoga.  Olga looks forward to learning about the U.S. education system and celebrating American holidays such as Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter.

Yana is originally from Irkutsk, Russia where she is studying for her bachelor’s degree in Business Administration and Entrepreneurship at Irkutsk State University.  Yana leads a group in cleaning the area around Baikal Lake and volunteers at an organization that helps children in orphanages.  She also volunteers as an English teacher in her local community.  Yana looks forward to traveling, learning about American culture, singing in choir, and celebrating Halloween and Christmas in the U.S.

Originally from Yekaterinburg, Russia, Anastasia is pursuing a specialist degree in Law at the Ural State Law Academy.  She has been an active participant in various Moot Court Competitions and a member of many Model international law organizations, such as the Shanghai Cooperation Organization and the European Court of Human Rights.  Anastasia has also volunteered in the law clinic at her university, giving legal advice to people who could not afford professional lawyers.  During her Global UGRAD fellowship, Anastasia is hoping to learn more about the history of American colonies and the American Revolution.  She is looking forward to celebrating Thanksgiving and going to New York to celebrate New Year’s.

Originally from Ryazan, Russia, Elena is pursuing her bachelor’s degree at Ryazan State University in the field of International Relations.  Her hobbies include playing the clarinet and singing in Russian, English, and Spanish.  She is a member of the English club at her university and led the international team at the International Youth Forum in Seliger 2010.  While in the United States, Elena would like to investigate how different, races, cultures, and religions coexist in America.  She looks forward to participating in holiday celebrations and campus concerts.

Igor was a fellow of Model United Nations in the Russian Far East Club, and he worked with the Rotary Club on a variety of projects, such as improving living conditions of orphans and the elderly and planting trees.  Igor developed “Kind Taxi,” a project aimed at encouraging ordinary people to reflect on their role in society and give them a chance to do something good for others.  Igor enjoys playing badminton, volleyball, and paintball, and he loves hiking in the mountains. During his Global UGRAD fellowship, Igor hopes to learn more about 20th Century History from the American perspective.  He is also looking forward to participating in a 2012 Presidential Rally.

Originally from Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, Russia, Ekaterina is currently pursuing her bachelor’s degree in International Accounting at the Khabarovsk State Academy of Economics and Law in Khabarovsk.  Ekaterina enjoys working with children, regularly volunteering in both schools and orphanages.  She has also been a member of the Model United Nations and the Debate Club.  In her free time, Ekaterina enjoys snowboarding and dancing.  During her Global UGRAD fellowship, she will study International Relations, and wants to get a better insight into the experience of African-Americans.  Ekaterina is also hoping to learn more about the way American students volunteer and participate in community service.  She is looking forward to American football games, celebrating Thanksgiving, and going to Blues concerts.

Oksana is originally from Mykolaiv, Ukraine.  She is pursuing her bachelor’s degree in Foreign Language Translation at the Petro Mohyla Black Sea State University.  She has contributed to and served as chief editor of “Vagant,” her university’s youth newspaper.  Oksana has also been a member of Mykolaiv Students’ Union, participated in art fairs, and organized a variety of charitable rock festivals.  She is closely connected with the Peace Corps, having participated in and volunteered with their projects.  Oksana plays guitar in a rock band, has been studying professional photography, and as a passionate hitchhiker, she likes to travel.  During her Global UGRAD fellowship, Oksana is hoping to learn more about African-American culture in the US.  She is also looking forward to attending American rock festivals, cheering her team on in her university’s football games, and celebrating Thanksgiving and Christmas.
