Gender, Law and Transition in Albania: Assessing the Impact of Albania's Domestic Violence Prevention Law (Research Brief)
Domestic violence is an important public health problem which is currently garnering more and more global health attention. And in Albania this is especially true given the country's recently enacted and in many ways, very progressive, "Measures Against Family Violence," the new law addressing violence in the home. In Albania, the problem of domestic violence is both underreported yet anecdotally widespread and deeply ingrained in some traditional views on family and honor... A success story in many ways, the passing of the new law nevertheless still faces great challenges of bureaucractic implementation as well as popular and cultural acceptance. This timely study intends to gain greater understanding of this new law and its implications for the health and welfare of victims of violence while also clarifying the influence of international agencies into the everyday lives of citizens living in the wake of massive economic and political transition.
