The violent collapse of socialist Yugoslavia created opportunitie for its successor governments to reconfigure relations with their diasporas and overcome the hostility that had hitherto marred state-diaspora relations. My research looks at the diverging ways in which the Croatian and Serbian diasporas have been incorporated into Croatian and Serbian politics and statebuilding since 1990. It makes an important contribution to research on political relations between sending states and diasporas, and the effects of diaspora political transnationalism on political competition in the homeland.
