Balkan Wars Between the Lines: A Social History, 1912-1919 (Research Brief)
This dissertation project reconstructs the experiences of Orthodox Christian populations living in the region of Macedonia from 1912 through 1919 – a period during which the area was contested in the Balkan Wars of 1912-1913 and in World War I.
It assesses the nature and causes of violence in Macedonia among fellow-Orthodox Christians during the wars and during the intervening periods of peace. It also ascertains the balance of priorities motivating local residents as they attempted to control their individual and collective destinies and influence opinion during this period of transition in the region from an Ottoman imperial province to a borderland contested between relatively young nation-states.
