ProMedia II - Regional
The ProMedia II Regional program currently supports the implementation of the Media Sustainability Index (MSI) for Europe and Eurasia.
Since its launch in 2001, the MSI has evolved into an important benchmark study to assess how media systems change over time and across borders. The ProMedia Regional program has also previously supported investigative journalism initiatives, media law reform, and alternative broadcasting in the region.
The ProMedia Regional Program is supported through a cooperative agreement to IREX from the United States Agency for International Development.
Project Activities
The Media Sustainability Index: The MSI analyzes the media sectors annually in 21 countries across Europe and Eurasia. Panels of local media and civil society professionals follow a standardized methodology to assess their country’s media sector spanning five “objectives”: free speech, professionalism, plurality of news sources, business management of media, and supporting institutions for the sector.
In previous years, the ProMedia Regional program supported investigative journalism initiatives across the region. Initiatives included support for the Clean Hands Website run by Beta News Agency, which covered corruption across the region, and investigativejournalism.org, which provided an online portal for linking investigative journalists and resources for the region. The site has since been integrated into the regular operations of MediaCentar Sarajevo.
