Camera as Voice
The Camera as Voice project uses film to promote self-expression among Yemeni youth and engage them in constructive dialogue about complex and controversial issues—such as globalization, anti-Westernism, modernization, alienation, and community disadvantage—that can contribute to youth radicalization.
Camera as Voice is funded by the Strategic Programme Fund (SPF) of the United Kingdom Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) and is implemented in cooperation with IREX Europe and local NGO partner Youth Leadership Development Foundation (YLDF).
This project is now completed.
Goals
• Empower youth to explore issues important to them in their own voices by providing outlets for creative and productive self-expression
• Change perceptions about issues related to radicalization in the Yemeni community
• Expose youth who are susceptible to radicalization to moderate ideas and create opportunities for dialogue through film viewings and facilitated discussions
Background
Yemen has a large population of alienated and frustrated youth with limited economic or educational opportunities and few outlets to express their opinions on critical issues affecting them and the future of their country. These disenfranchised youth are increasingly exposed to the voices of extremism and have the potential to become radicalized, spreading instability within Yemen and beyond.
Project Activities
NGO Training: Local NGOs in Sana’a, Aden, Taiz, Hadramaut, and Ibb receive technical and facilitation training and video equipment.
Youth Film Production: Local NGOs assist youth in target regions to collect and edit film footage.
Film Viewings: Partner NGOs conduct live viewing and discussion sessions for youth in target communities, encouraging open and constructive discussion on controversial issues raised in the youth-produced films.
Tapestry Film Production: A professionally produced documentary weaves together segments of the various youth-produced films to create a “tapestry” of how young Yemenis view controversial issues.
