TV Chernivtsi Expands Live Coverage

Motivated by partner WFIE (Evansville, IN), TV Chernivtsi (Western Ukraine) invested in new ways to expand their live coverage. They created more local programming, extended live capabilities, and found new methods for on-air audience interaction. Organizers of the city-wide Christmas holiday celebrations highlighted TV Chernivtsi’s impressive improvements by asking them to exclusively broadcast the event, rather than a state-owned or neighboring regional television company as in the past. The boost in marketing and promotion TV Chernivtsi received heralds a new era of improvements and expansion.

Grivna Enhances Online and Advertisement Offerings

Grivna (Kherson) and partner Spokesman-Review (Spokane, WA) worked closely on developing best practices for Grivna’s growing online and advertisement departments. Working with the concept of the “transparent newsroom”, Grivna aims to add a combination of online reflection, interactivity, and live streaming daily planning meetings to their online news delivery. Grivna also made strides in improving advertising sales and promotion. Implementing ad placement, design and printing practices that have been successful for the Spokesman Review, Grivna account executives have already seen their work with clients improve, increasing the outlet's revenues.

Telegazeta Moves Toward Daily Expansion

Telegazeta (Stakhanov) partnered with the Tribune Review (Pittsburgh, PA) to gain vital skills to expand in the regional market. Telegazeta is taking exciting steps towards purchasing their own publishing house, developing new software, increasing advertising, and switching from a weekly to a daily paper. Expansion requires increased staff, and Telegazeta also took away ideas on creating detailed job descriptions, coordinating a larger newsroom, and developing a multi-stage interview process to capture the most qualified candidates.

Radio MIX brings community together for charity

Commercial station Radio MIX (Dnipropetrovs’k) discovered the value of community involvement and social branding from public station WFIU (Bloomington, IN). Putting these new concepts into practice, Radio Mix launched a charitable project to raise funds for equipment to save newborns in a local hospital. The campaign asked people to send text messages from their cell phones for a donation of 1 Hryvnya ($0.20). The hospital purchased over $20,000 in new equipment, and Radio Mix increased its position in the community.

Melitopolskie Vedomosti increases their coverage

Exchange visits with the Observer-Reporter (Washington, PA) enabled Melitopolskie Vedomosti (Zaporizhzhia) to focus on business management and expansion. They worked on several new pages (including greetings and obituaries), and organized special event promotions. The two partners developed such close working relationships that they also hope to launch an exchange program in 2007 for students involved in the publishing process of Melitopolskie Vedomosti’s youth supplements to go to the United States.

TV UNION launches new investigative reporting program

As a result of partnering with 13 WMAZ (Macon, GA), TV UNION (Donetsk) launched a new local city investigative reporting program called “Zone of Special Attention.” The program focuses on a community problem and identifies ways to advocate for government action. To help support program development, UNION won a grant from SCOOP, funded by the Danish Association of Investigative Reporters. The winning program reported on health and environmental problems related to coal mining near small villages around Makyivka and the Donetsk region.

Sobytie improves subscription methods

Sobytie (Dnipropetrovsk) conducted a new subscription campaign, using the expertise of US newspaper New Mexican (Santa Fe, NM). Based on the theory of “easy subscribers” (bank subscribers), they began offering subscribers additional benefits such as free movie cards, cards for free ad publication, and cards for free bakery goods. They conducted a survey to find out why subscriptions were not renewed, and also planned new supplements on various topics (culture, history of the city, freedom of speech, etc) to improve the newspaper’s image as well.


Kremenchutskyy Telegraph develops new weekend edition

During Kremenchutskyy Telegraph’s (Poltava)partnership with the Lexington Chronicle Corporation (Lexington, SC), the Telegraph’s ownerworked on a concept for a new weekend newspaper, called Subotniy Telegraf.  The newspaper includes information about weekend entertainment,along with soft news on different topics.

Vezha TV: Demonstrating Corporate Responsibility in Ukraine

Vezha Television introduced a campaign to assist a local retirement home based on the successful model they learned from WDBJ-7 in Roanoke, Virginia. The campaign led to donations by 18 local businesses and directly from citizens, allowing needed repairs to the retirement home, struggling in the transition from a socialist to a market system.

Kafa Introduces New Online Issue

After working with its US partner, The Herald-Times in Bloomington, Indiana, Kafa completely redesigned and updated its on-line edition. A new English language version of the site was created and new technologies were introduced for online subscriptions supported by an online subscription campaign and an interactive forum for the youth page of the newspaper.

RIA Corporation Expands Business Operations

RIA Corporation’s (Vinnytsia) advertising department achieved 10-30% growth during the life of their participation in UMPP due to innovations they introduced with assistance from their American partner. As a result, the company was able to purchase a printing press, launch a new printing house, and introduce new papers. RIA also started an election information agency that provides news about elections in Ukraine to other media outlets.

TV-4 (Ternopil) Introduces New Civil Society Programs

After exchange visits with WFIE in Evansville, IN, TV-4 began broadcasting five new programs focused on civil society and social issues of concern to their community. The station also started a set of commercial projects with local manufacturers and developed station promotional materials. TV-4 revamped its logo, which was developed with assistance of its partner station, WFIE. Combined, these changes helped improve the market position of TV-4.
