Crisis Center Established for March 2006 Parliamentary Elections

On Election Day in March 2006, IREX’s LDEP--together with the Union of Journalists, the Independent Media Union and the Association of Media Lawyers--held a 26-hour crisis center, with five lawyers and three coordinators that provided 72 consultations.  The crisis center also received funding from the OSCE and the US Embassy PAS.  The center fielded issues such as: 

  • In Sevastopol, the head of the district election commission demanded that a TV crew get her prior permission for the news story they were doing.
  • In Crimea, a territorial election commission tried to exclude journalists from its meeting.

Advertising Revenue Growth in Regional Media Company

During the period 2002-2004, RIACorporation’s (Vinnytsia) advertising department achieved 10-30% annual growth.  RIA also developed additional outlets: VSIM (Khmelnytsky), RIA (Kozyatyin), RIA-Plus (Ternopil), RIA-Tyzhden (Zhytomyr), and launched an information agency which provided news about elections in Ukraine to other media outlets. The total circulation of RIA Corporation’s newspapers reached 120,000 per week.

Paper Launches Young Journalists Initiative

Kafa newspaper (Feodosiya) launched a project for young journalists, which focused on developing the next generation of Ukrainian journalists.  The project, “Young Journalists Training” worked with Feodosiya high school children.  These high schoolers were selected for specialized practical courses within Kafa newspaper, and during international education week, the young trainees drafted a youth edition of Kafa newspaper and developed a structure for an on-line version of Kafa newspaper’syouth edition.
