The University Administration Support Program (UASP) - China

Program Overview

IREX designed UASP-China with support from the Starr Foundation to improve the administration and management of select Chinese universities. The program began in 2006 and is providing a unique opportunity to Chinese university administrators to gain first-hand experience in US university administration through research internships. Participating Chinese universities aim to establish direct partnerships with their counterparts in the United States and to initiate new administrative reforms in their institutions.

KEY ISSUES AND OBJECTIVES

Support select universities in People’s Republic of China in implementing administrative and management reforms.

PROJECT RESULTS

Senior-level administrators from state universities and the National Academy of Education Administration received 10-week US research internships to work with their US counterparts and to study pertinent management skills and models.

Program Activities

  • Studying University Administration Models in the United States
US research internships give senior-level university administrators from People’s Republic of China the opportunity to work directly with their counterparts in prestigious US universities. Chinese administrators participate and shadow their US counterparts in daily activities. Chinese fellows study US administrative and management models in areas such as university strategic planning, financing and budget management, integration of teaching and research, and quality assurance.

  • Implementing New Administrative and Management Models in Chinese Universities
The UASP-China fellows create case studies with suggested administrative changes for their home university, which that they can implement on their return to China. For case studies published in the author’s working language visit our program results page.

  • Developing Partnerships between Chinese and US Universities
UASP-China promotes collaboration and development of sustainable partnerships between UASP-China fellows, their US counterparts, and their institutions. The partnerships developed in UASP-China result in new projects such as administrator and faculty exchanges, credit system recognition, and organization of international conferences.
