Tasleema Begum, Social Studies Teacher

Ms. Begum attended the Eden Mohila College and received her bachelor of science degree in geography and zoology in 1991. In 1998 she earned a Master of Science degree in Geography from the Jagannath University College in Dhaka. Ms. Begum then continued her university studies at the Aga Khan University-Institute for Educational Development, earning her master of education degree in December 2005. Ms. Begum now teaches geography as well as professional development for teachers.
Ayan Chowdhury, English Teacher

Ms. Chowdhury received her bachelor of arts in June 1989 from Srimangal Government College before going on to complete master of arts at Dhaka College in 1995 and a master of education from the Government Teachers’ Training College in 1999. She has been teaching for 11 years. In addition to teaching, Ms. Chowdhury has been a member of the Committee for Conscious Citizens of Transparency International, Bangladesh.

Ms. Chowdhury earned a bachelor of arts in English Language and Literature from Dhaka University in 1997. In 2000 she completed a master of arts in English Literature, also from Dhaka University. She has been teaching for 6 years. She also works in Community Service and has attended an international teachers’ training seminar in Beirut, Lebanon, organized by iEARN.

Mr. Haque completed his bachelor of arts and master of arts in English at Rajshahi College in Rajshahi. He received his bachelor of education in 2006 from the Teachers’ Training College in Rajshahi. Mr. Haque is a member of the Bangladesh English Language Teaching Association (BELTA). He has been teaching at his current school for 4 years. In the United States, Mr. Haque hopes to collect some essential books on teaching methodology, learn ways of designing curriculum, and share his ideas with other participants.

Mr. Hossain earned his bachelor’s degree in social studies in July 2000 from the National University in Dhaka’s Department of Social Studies. In June 2007, he completed his master of arts in English Literature and Language at Shanta Mariam University of Creative Technology in Dhaka. He has been teaching for 7 years, 4 years at his current institution and previously at the PACE Programme, BRAC, as a teacher trainer, and at the Child Laboratory School as an assistant teacher.

Mr. Hossain graduated with a bachelor of arts in 1992 from Rajshahi University. He earned a bachelor of education from National University in 2006 and expects to graduate with a master’s in English in 2007 from Shanto-Mariam University of Creative Technology. He has been a teacher at Rajendrapur High School for thirteen years. He also serves as the chairperson for a teacher’s association for implementing an adolescent health program. Mr. Hossain hopes to share his U.S. experience in the Teacher’s Development Forum.

Mr. Hossain graduated with a bachelor’s degree in English in 1997 from National University in Dhaka. He also earned his master’s degree there in English in 1999. In 2006, Mr. Hossain finished a bachelor’s in education at Uttara University-Dhaka. He has been a teacher at Rasunia High School for over four years and has participated in many teacher trainings. Mr. Hossain would like to gain more experience with foreign teaching methods.

Mr. Rahaman graduated with a master’s degree in arts in 1998 from National University-Dhaka. He has over eleven years of teaching experience at Kotowalibag High School and has participated in teacher training courses. Mr. Rahaman is particularly interested in improving the education of underprivileged students in Bangladesh and he hopes to learn more about this issue in American schools.

Mr. Rahman graduated with a bachelor’s degree in arts in 1998 from Dhaka University. He has over eleven years of teaching experience at Maloncha High School. Mr. Rahman is particularly interested in focusing on improving the education of women in Bangladesh and he hopes to gain more experience in American schools on this issue.

Mr. Roy earned his bachelor of arts at Chittagong University in 1994, his Diploma in Education from Bangladesh Open University in 1999, and his master of arts in English from Shanto Mariam University in Dhaka in 2008. In addition to the teaching profession, Mr. Roy is engaged in the school managing committee, and he is the founding chairperson of the English Teachers’ Development Forum of his district.

Ms. Saha earned her bachelor of arts in English in 1994 from Rajshahi University, her master of arts in English from Rajshahi University in 1995, and her bachelor of education from the Open University in Dhaka in 2006. Ms. Saha has been teaching for 5 years. She would like to develop listening, speaking, and writing skills in English, prepare “fruitful” lesson plans, and initiate quality education during the TEA program.

Ms. Siraj earned her bachelor of arts in English in 1980 from Dhaka University. She then went on to earn her master of arts in English from the same university in 1982. Ms. Siraj is currently expecting to receive her master of arts in ELT from the Presidency University Gulshan, in Dhaka. She is an active member of the Bangladesh English Language Teachers’ Association and attends all of the ELT workshops that are available to her. Ms. Saha has attended a conference hosted by the Nepal English Language Teachers’ Association, held in Nepal in February 2006. She has been teaching for 21 years.

Ms. Abdykrimova has a diploma from the Department of Foreign Languages at the Kyrgyz State Women’s Pedagogical Institute. Since 1998 she has been participating in seminars organized by the Soros Foundation-Kyrgyzstan, Lingua, and English Teachers’ Association. In May 2006 Ms. Abdykrimova participated in the “Environmental Education Conference” organized by the Peace Corps. She has taught for a total of 15 years, and has been teaching at the Pokrovka Secondary School since 1996. Ms. Abdykrimova also spends time volunteering at an NGO “History Sources,” and teaching computer competency to visitors.

Ms. Gaisina graduated with degrees in foreign languages in 1998 and 2000 from Jalalabat State University. She has been a teacher at the lyceum for three years and has participated in several teacher training conferences. Ms. Gaisina would like to share her experience in American schools with her colleagues through seminars and training sessions.

Ms. Kakeeva received a diploma from the Jalalabat State University in 2004. She is currently a member of the BazarKorgon Teachers’ Association, and in 2004 she was a presenter at the Third Annual Central Asian English Teachers’ Conference, and was a trainer for Project Hope, where she helped to conduct seminars on STDs and reproductive health at schools in BazarKorgon, Kerben, and Masy Village. In 2005 and 2006 Ms. Kakeeva volunteered as a camp counselor at the regional youth Democracy camp, “Girls’ State.” She wants to learn more about American classrooms’ use of visual aides, new methods of teaching, and the American grading system.

Ms. Turdalieva studied Romano-Germanic Philology at Bishkek Humanitarian University. She received her diploma in 1997, after which she has taught English to grades 8-11 for 9 years. During the TEA program Ms. Turdalieva hopes to share experiences with American teachers and discuss teaching methodologies, curriculum writing, and teaching strategies. After the program she plans to supply her resource center with interesting books about the United States.

Ms. Satarova graduated with a bachelor’s degree in foreign languages in 1989 from Osh State Pedagogical Institute. She has been an English teacher at her school since 2004. She also helps to train U.S. Peace Corps volunteers when they first arrive to Kyrgyzstan. Ms. Satarova is particularly interested in American teaching methodologies and use of computers as a teaching tool.

Ms. Gulmirzoeva graduated from the Dushanbe State Pedagogical Institute’s Departments of History and English in 1982. Since then she has taught English and History at School No 12. She has also been a teacher-trainer in Porshinev. During the TEA program she hopes to improve her English speaking skills and learn from her American colleagues’ experiences.

Ms. Kamolova received a diploma from the Dushanbe State Pedagogical University in May 2000. She has been teaching grades 7, 8, and 11 at the Secondary School #5 for 7 years. She has participated in workshops such as “Innovative Methods of Teaching,” “Trainer-training,” and “Gender Balance in the Textbooks.” She is the leader of the English club at her school and a co-author of new English textbooks. She would like to share Tajik culture and traditions with Americans during the TEA program.

In 1980, Mr. Makhsumov received a diploma from the Leninabad State Pedagogical Institute. In 2001 he attended the summer camp of the Soros Foundation and in 2003 he participated in the 2nd annual Eurasian International Conference in Turkestan. He has taught 6th and 11th forms at the Lyceum No 1 for 10 years. One of Mr. Makhsumov’s aims at his Lyceum is to contribute to the strengthening of diplomatic, scientific, and economical relations with other countries through English.

Ms. Valieva has a diploma from the Khorog State University, which she received in June 1999. She studied in the Economics Faculty, in the departments of international and economic relations. Ms. Valieva has taught at the Aga Khan Lycee for 6 years, mostly teaching Economics in the English language. For 2 years she taught ancient history for fifth grades as well. She is also the leader of the Business Club. She hopes to improve her teaching methods and to make contributions to the educational system in her own country.
