Violence in Central Europe: Changing Attitudes and Changing Laws
Project Abstract: Dr. Fabian will investigate how domestic
violence became a central topic of debate among publics, governments and
social movements among the 2004 European Union accession countries, in
particular, the case of Slovenia. His research will fully illuminate the
differences of public attitudes and governmental policy responses to domestic
violence across Central Europe. Dr. Fabian will interview movement activists
and study textual analysis of government policy documents.

Secession Fails: The Rise and Fall of Ethnic Nationalism in Russia
Project Abstract: Dr. Giuliano will research why Russia
did not collapse along ethnic lines as the Soviet Union did in 1991. She
will seek to understand why Russia's ethnic populations removed their
support from opposition nationalist movements in the republics during
the early 1990s. Dr. Giuliano plans to visit Moscow to examine 40-60 newspapers
published in each of Russian's 21 republics at the Khimki branch of the
Russian State Library.

Project Title: Anticipating
the Ripple Effects of Military Interventions: A Case Study of Moldova's
Reactions to the Soviet Invasion in Hungary in 1956
Project Abstract: Dr. Granville will use Moldova in October
1956 as a case study, probing the effects of rebellion on neighboring
countries and the reasons why people rebel, such as observation of other
successful rebellions, economic deprivation, rising expectations, and
political repression. She will study how the Moldovan people reacted to
the Hungarian events and if the student unrest in nearby Romania affected
them. Dr. Granville will work mostly with the Russian-language documents
in the Archive of Social-Political Organizations in the Moldovan Republic.

the Trail of Displaced "Trophy" Books During WWII and its Aftermath
Project Abstract: Dr. Grimsted will further investigate
displaced books from the imperial Russian palaces after WWII. She will
find more Soviet sources in St. Petersburg and at the three palaces. Dr.
Grimsted will also verify details of the fate of the books in Soviet
hands and work to clarify some of the misconceptions in published volumes
of Russia’s Lost Book Treasures.

the City: Power Politics, Everyday Life and Mythmaking in Soviet Sevastopol's
Reconstruction, 1943-54
Project Abstract: Dr. Qualls will focus on a multidisciplinary
project on contested space and ideas, collective memory and urban experience
in post-WW II Sevastopol's reconstruction, which challenges notions of
top-down rule and shows Soviet constituencies contesting and scripting
myths that re-legitimized the regime and/or provided a sense of place
and self to an urban population beleaguered by devastating losses from
wars and terror. Using oral interviews, newspapers, and archival documents,
he will illuminate how and why the key images of the city are perpetuated,
promoted to visitors, further challenged, and understood.

of the automobile in the Soviet state and the lives of its citizens as
instanced in "Soviet Detroits," the places where cars were produced
and the people recruited to produce them; road building and the "struggle
against roadlessness," and car distribution, ownership, maintenance,
and repair. He will conduct archival research and interviews with drivers
in Moscow, which will be supplemented by oral history interviews with
former auto workers in Togliatti and Naberezhnye Chelny, along with on-site
visits to auto plants.

Project Abstract: Dr. Williams will trace the implementation
of reforms of Romanian higher education from the mid-1990s to the present.
He will examine the reforms aimed to decentralize the management of higher
education so as to promote greater curricular relevance, responsiveness
to the market, and financial sustainability. Dr. Williams will also research
Implementation, its successes and failures, along with recommended policy
strategies from the perspective of rectors and key stakeholders in eight
Romanian universities, as well as the Ministry of Education, national
education leadership over the past 10 years, and national coordinating
bodies charged with supervision and oversight.
