Regional Support for Investigative Journalism

A professional media informs citizens and helps provide the information necessary to hold governments, businesses, and civic organizations accountable. Investigative journalism plays a key role in this process of accountability. The ProMedia Regional project has placed a special emphasis on investigative journalism by providing resources for journalists and supporting efforts to conduct in-depth and entrepreneurial journalism.

Launched in 2004 with support from ProMedia Regional, the website www.investigativejournalism.org has rapidly developed into a leading online resource for investigative journalists. More than 800 investigative journalists from 37 countries subscribe to the site where they can collaborate on stories, access information on training, share investigative stories, and obtain information on experts. The site is now part of the NetNovinar website, an online journalism resource center originally supported by IREX under the ProMedia Bosnia program.

With support from ProMedia Regional, BETA News Agency launched the Clean Hands website which provides investigative reporting on key issues relating to the countries of Southeast Europe. BETA is one of the leading news agencies in Central and Eastern Europe, and the Clean Hands site averages 25,000 visits per month. Stories posted on the site have led to direct results, including the dismissals or resignations of corrupt officials, and police investigations into alleged corruption.
