Program Overview

The ProMedia II Regional program, funded by USAID, has operated throughout Europe and Eurasia since 1999 as the successor to the ProMedia I Regional program which IREX implemented from 1995 to 1999. The program supports investigative and entrepreneurial journalism and sharing of lessons learned across countries in developing independent media.

PROJECT ACTIVITIES

  • The Media Sustainability Index (MSI): Since 2001, the MSI (www.irex.org/msi) has provided an annual analysis of the media sectors in 20 countries of the region. The MSI is used as a key resource by local media, media development professionals, donors, and academics. IREX will continue to publish annual MSI reports for 2006, 2007, and 2008.

  • Investigative and Entrepreneurial Reporting:  IREX provides small grants to support investigative and entrepreneurial reporting on topics such as corruption, trafficking, health, conflict and reconciliation, business and economics, and politics. Preference is given to cooperative efforts between media outlets, across borders, and to reporting from otherwise inaccessible venues such as The Hague. Grants are also available for projects seeking to reform media laws, enhance the safety of journalists, or provide training and resources for investigative journalists.

  • Information-Sharing and Lessons Learned: IREX supports initiatives to disseminate and share the best practices for media development. Since 1997, IREX has supported best practices workshops and conferences in which journalists, donors, and media development professionals share experiences and lessons learned related to the development of independent media.
