Protecting Dignity Against Human Trading (PDAHT)
Program Overview
![]() |
Although there is a widespread problem with human trafficking in Egypt, the government and civil society have only in the past few years begun to address the problem. New policies adopted in 2007 by the government of Egypt and an increase in leadership on anti-trafficking issues by Egyptian government institutions have created a promising window of opportunity that allows for the development of a more systematic effort to coordinate activities and significantly strengthen Egypt's efforts to combat trafficking.
IREX's 12-month Protecting Dignity Against Human Trading (PDAHT) project pursues this opportunity. The project is being implemented in the Cairo metropolitan area and works closely with key federal ministries and government research institutions to provide technical training and research support to these institutions.
IREX will also work with a selected group of NGOs providing them with support to build skills and understanding of human trafficking, widen current and/or future activities to include anti-trafficking program elements, and to work collaboratively with government institutions to create a more comprehensive multi-sectoral response to human trafficking.
IREX is working with the Egyptian Center for Development Services in the implementation of this project.
Key Objectives
- Support government of Egypt institutions in their effort to better understand and address human trafficking in Egypt by providing technical training and research support that increases their familiarity with comparative government-led anti-trafficking efforts in the region and best practices globally
- Help strengthen the capacity of NGOs to address anti-trafficking issues and increase their understanding of the multi-dimensional roles civil society can play, while linking these organizations with government institutions to provide a more comprehensive cross sectoral approach to combating human trafficking.
