IEP Fellow Gains Experience at School Internship

For eight weeks IEP fellow Manal Salam has been paired with Ms. Martha Dodson for the internship part of her IEP fellowship. During these eight weeks Ms. Dodson arranged for Ms. Salam to attend English classes, foreign language classes as well as many different science classes at Cape Central High School in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. Ms. Salam also co-teaches with Ms. Dodson as well as teaches her own lessons at Cape Central High School. The two have also bonded personally spending some time together on the weekends and attending Cape Central events like a school play. Ms. Salam writes about her time spent with Ms. Dodson, “She is very cooperative and friendly and wants to give me the full experience and meet my requests…Professionally, she gave me the opportunity to teach and that by itself was enriching.”
The experience of Ms. Salam and Ms. Dodson is not unique as every IEP fellow spent at least eight weeks at a secondary school close to their host university city and each was paired with a different teacher mentor. The school internship is an integral part of the International Educators Program.
