Salam and Dodson

IEP Fellow Gains Experience at School Internship
For eight weeks IEP fellow Manal Salam has been paired with Ms. Martha Dodson for the internship part of her IEP fellowship. During these eight weeks Ms. Dodson arranged for Ms. Salam to attend English classes, foreign language classes as well as many different science classes at Cape Central High School in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. More

Mr. Abd-Allah received a bachelor’s degree in English from Assiut University in 1993. He has also received a general diploma for English methodology from South Valley University and a certificate for overseas teachers of English from the American University in Cairo. He has taught English for 11 years, initially teaching primary school students and for the last eight years teaching secondary school students. Mr. Abd-Allah is especially interested in learning about new education strategies and curriculum writing.

While on the program, Mr. Abdel-Seed would like to focus on exploring new methodologies for engaging students in a more participatory and active classroom setting.

While participating in IEP, Mr. Abouabdalla would like to learn more about accents and dialects to enhance his instruction of those areas of TESOL when he returns to Egypt. He is also interested in learning about educational reform, specifically how to ensure that the educational system equips and prepares youth with skills necessary for entry into the workforce.

She has conducted workshops at the British Council and English Language Teaching (ELT) in progressive methods of teaching English language and e of technology to enhance teaching effectiveness. Ms. Balaji is interested in exploring methods of integrating technology in language-teaching.

Ms. Jayakrishnan would like to learn how to better incorporate technology into her classroom and to have a first hand opportunity to compare the American and Indian education systems. She is also interested in curriculum development and alternative assessment for English.

Mr. Ooi has been a teacher for 26 years, including eight at Penang Free School. He was promoted as a master teacher by the Ministry of Education in 2003. He has also served as trainer of teachers. He would like to continue his development of different teaching styles to help him adapt to the different ways his students learn. He is also interested in learning about teaching and educational software.

Mr. Saadi would like to further develop integrated skills and strategies and examine modern techniques to increase diversity in teaching English in a country that focuses first on Arabic and French-language education.

Ms. Salam graduated from Beirut Arab University in 2001 with a BS in mathematics. She then went on to earn a master’s degree in mathematics from American University Beirut in 2005. She has been a teacher of mathematics for five years at René Mouawwad Secondary Official School. One of her goals while in the United States is to gain more experience with different assessment techniques and evaluation methods for math curriculum.

Mr. Shaleheen earned a BS and MS in geology from Dhaka University in 1986 and 1987. He has taught science for 14 years. Mr. Shaleheen would like to gain more experience with student-centered teaching methodologies while participating in IEP.

Shanti Subramaniam, English Teacher

Ms. Subramaniam received a BS in biology in 1990 from University of Malaya and in 2006 obtained a master’s degree in teaching English as a second language. She has been an English teacher for 15 years, most recently teaching at Sekolah Menengah Methodist (ACS) – Klang. Since 2002, Ms. Subramaniam has also served as a trainer of math and science teachers who teach in English. Her main goals while participating on IEP are to gain new insights on teaching and learning strategies in different classroom settings, and to learn more about computer training for teachers.

Ms. Tan graduated from University Science Malaysia with a BS in Biology in 1994. She then received a master’s degree in education in 1997 from the same university with a specialization in psychometric and educational testing. She has been a teacher for 22 years, the last twelve at Polo Ground School where she also serves as secretary of the Parent Teacher Association.

Ms. Yap received a master’s degree in educational administration from Joetsu University of Education in Japan in 1997. She then earned a MS in corporate communication from University Putra Malaysia in 2001. Ms. Yap has been a teacher for 22 years, the last nine of which she has taught at Raja Ali National Secondary School. One of her goals while on IEP is to learn methodologies and strategies to make English education meaningful and useful for teachers and students.

Muhammad Yusran, English Teacher

Mr. Yusran earned a bachelor’s degree in English from IKIP Makassar in 1994 as well as a master’s degree in English language studies from Hasanuddin University in 2001. He has been a teacher of English for more than 14 years, currently teaching at SMA Negeri 9 Makassar as a permanent English teacher and STIK GIA Makassar as well as at Makassar Muhammadiyah University as a part-time lecturer. Mr. Yusran is interested in learning more about information and resource centers as he would like to set up an English information center for teachers in Indonesia.


Teacher Biographies

Kent State University

Ms. Rebecca Havel is an English as a Second Language (ESL) teacher at Lakewood High School in Lakewood, Ohio.  Ms. Havel earned her Master's Degree in TESOL. She is a teacher mentor for Adel Henein. She has been teaching and working with teenagers for 28 years and still has a passion for it.

Mr. Doug Wiesen is an ESL Teacher at Harding Middle School, Lakewood, Ohio. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Secondary Education from Slippery Rock State University in Pennsylvania and a Masters in English from George Mason University, Virginia.  Mr. Wiesen first became interested in teaching students from other countries while completing his post grad work in ESL at the University of Akron with Dr. Lynn Smolen. Mr. Wiesen is a teacher mentor for Muhammad Yusran from Indonesia. 

Mrs. Andrea Young is an ESL teacher who teaches ESL classes for High School credit at Solon High School in Solon, Ohio. She also teaches support classes to help her ESL. students in their other class work. Mrs. Young is a teacher mentor for Valsa Balaji.

Southeast Missouri State University

Ms. Martha Dodson is a Mathematics teacher at Cape Central High School. Her degrees include a BA in Biology plus teaching certification from the University of Missouri-St. Louis and a Masters in Natural Science (MNS) in Mathematics and Chemistry from Southeast Missouri State University, Cape Girardeau, Missouri.  Her teaching experience over the last 28 years includes Biology, Chemistry, and Mathematics in three different schools. Ms. Dodson is paired with Manal Salam from Lebanon.

Ms. Jean Gibbs is a teacher of Physics at Jackson High School in Jackson, Missouri.  She is the teacher mentor for IEP fellow Samira Bari from Bangladesh.  Ms. Gibbs states that her and Samira “have both learned so much from each other and have truly enjoyed getting to know one another and about each other’s countries. The students at my school are also very interested in learning about the schools and culture in Bangladesh from Mrs.  Bari.”

Ms. Bonnie Nations is a Freshmen English teacher at Cape Central High School. Mrs. Nations is the host teacher for Samira El Filaly from Casablanca, Morocco.  Mrs. Nations also taught internationally. In 1996 she taught one semester in Asuncion, Paraguay. Nations has been at Cape Central for six years after teaching homebound students for five previous years.

Ms. Christine Warren is a teacher at Jackson High School in Jackson, Missouri. She has enjoyed teaching communication arts for 27 years. She is currently the teacher mentor for Mr. Abdelatiff El Moncef from Morocco. Ms. Warren has a Bachelor's of Science Degree in Education and a Master's Degree in English from Southeast Missouri State University, Abdelatiff's host university.
