Alumni Share Exchange Program Tips with Semi-Finalists in Osh, Kyrgyzstan

Alumni
Mavluda Hodjaeva (UGRAD 06) and Emil Madraimov
(UGRAD 06) share their US experience, including
studying at the US college, with UGRAD semi-
finalists at the Independent Internet Center (IIC) in
Osh, Kyrgyzstan.

Two alumni of US-government-sponsored exchange programs shared their impressions from their experience living in American and provided useful interview tips to semi-finalists of an exchange program to help them increase their chances of becoming finalists. On February 8, Mavluda Hodjaeva (UGRAD 06) and Emil Madraimov (UGRAD 06) delivered a seminar on US-government-sponsored exchange programs and their US experience for five semi-finalists of UGRAD program at the Independent Internet Center in Osh, Kyrgyzstan. The semi-finalists had requested a useful seminar from alumni because they would have program interviews later that month for the 2007-2008 academic years and wanted to learn all they could about alumni’s experience. Hodjaeva had spent an academic year studying at the Otero Junior College in La Junta, CO and Madraimov had studied at the Tacoma Community College in Tacoma, WA. In order to provide detailed information, Hodjaeva and Madraimov created a multimedia presentation for the students about the interview process, adjusting to life in the United States, coping with cultural shock, making friends, and studying at the US colleges on the example of educational institutions they studied.

Almost all these semi-finalists had taken IATP’s basic courses on computer and Internet use in preparation for the application process and to prepare for computer-related assignments US schools and colleges have. The semi-finalists and alumni also browsed the websites of Tacoma Community College and Otero Junior College to learn more about college clubs, US educational system, and on-campus student advancement opportunities. Hodjaeva remarked, “You are one step away from your dream to study in the United States. Try to feel comfortable with interview questions and be concise and condensed in your answers. You also need to rest a day before interview so you could be energetic and fresh during the interview.” Since its inception in the late 1990s, IATP has been helping Eurasian students to prepare for and succeed in their US-exchange programs, and providing them with resources to pass their skills and experiences along to their peers.
