A Study of Education and Religion in Armenia and Georgia

Ani Sarkissian completed a two-month grant period in the republics of Armenia and Georgia. A predoctoral candidate at the University of California in Los Angeles, she analyzed the role of religious groups in supporting democratization in transitioning societies. Sarkissian’s research tested a theory that identifies religious organization instead of religious doctrine or ideology as the main mechanism that connects religion to political action in support of democratic transition. Societal and legislative obstacles were found to be primary barriers to religious liberty in these two countries. In the future Sarkissian will focus on the current state of religious education and the extent of church influence in both Armenia and Georgia.
