Renovated Auditorium Enhances Opportunity for Expression
Project enhances ties with larger community while putting youth in touch with their roots
Educating students about their culture and traditions has always been a key objective for Mindresti Secondary School teachers and parents. The school has sought to do this by involving students in extracurricular activities and giving students the opportunity to shape their school experience by creating a school “Senate” and a Youth Council, and introducing school radio programming and a school newspaper. However, efforts to support youth engaged in theater and dance yielded few results.

Ocnita Community Elders Lead the Way
It has been observed that Moldovans have become reluctant to express their constitutional right to vote. The Citizen Participation Program (CPP), a Program implemented by the International Research and Exchanges Board (IREX) through funds from USAID, recognized an opportunity to reverse this trend by engaging underserved populations by giving them the knowledge and skills necessary to have an impact in the upcoming 2007 local elections.

Transparency Reunites Community
Fifty-six families live within a mile of the village of Negreshti and, while technically considered part of the village, these neighborhoods lack representation in the local public administration. When an initiative group formed to represent their neighborhoods’ interests, the group learned about the opportunity to participate in the USAID/IREX Citizen Participation Program (CPP). During the CPP facilitated community forum, the initiative group together with other interested citizens requested assistance from IREX to construct a new bus stop next to the highway which borders their neighborhoods and connects them with Chisinau.

CPP Helps Energize Community, Builds Hope for the Future
Through its Moldova Community Participation Program
(CPP), IREX is supporting a much needed school renovation project in
the village of Coscalia, located 25 miles outside of the capital city
of Chisinau.

Moldova’s Citizens Take Action
Citizens in villages across Moldova are mobilizing
to improve their communities with the help of IREX’s Moldova Citizen
Participation Program (CPP). Since November 2004, CPP has helped strengthen
the capacity of citizens to use democratic process to create tangible
and positive change.

Perserverance
and Participation Pay Off at Alecu Russo Lyceum
The outdoor restroom of the Alecu Russo lyceum in Orhei is 100 meters
from the school and is shared by pedestrians from the town market and
stadium. Every school day, in fair weather or foul, students from the
Alecu Russo theoretical lyceum in Orhei cross the 100 meter divide from
their school building to the outhouse.
