PROGRAM RESULTS:
- 85% final reports received to date;
- More than 80% of the proposed activities were accomplished successfully;
- More than 1,100 participants attended conferences organized by Small Grants recipients; and
- 24 publications were produced by Small Grants recipients resulting in more than 22,700 copies distributed.
SUCCESS STORIES:
Anahit Melkumyan, Armenia, CCEP 1996, Total Grant: $2,068
Lecturer at the Institute of National Economy, Management and Labor
Economics Department
Published a paper entitled, "Comparative Analysis of Labor Market and
Employment in NIS and Armenia." 250 copies were produced, almost half
of which were distributed to students in their last year at the management
faculty. It is one of the few materials on this topic in Armenian that
is available for students as well as lecturers.
Irina Petrosian, Armenia, FSA/Grad 1996, Total Grant: $3,400
Associate Professor, Yerevan State University, Department of Journalism
"Reporter is Conducting an Interview" is one of the first publications
on interview techniques for journalism students written and published
in the Armenian language. Over 1,000 copies of the publication have been
distributed to journalism departments, faculty members, libraries, and
newspaper offices in Yerevan, Gyumri, Artashat, and Ashtarak free of charge.
The publication is one of the few professional publications that further
the new trends in and the development of the journalism profession in
Armenia.
Alma Raissova, Kazakhstan, CI 1996, Total Grant: $4,680
Environmental and Energy Specialist, Environmental Policies & Institutions
for Central Asia
Created a database on the existing industrial enterprises of Kazakhstan
and published a brochure on the variety of existing methods for the calculation
of greenhouse gas emissions in three languages: English, Russian, and
Kazakh. 900 copies were distributed. The information was made available
to ministries, state bodies, the statistical bureau, mass media, and on
the Internet.

Committee
Conducted a seminar on "Parliamentarism in the Central Asian Region."
57 people attended from the parliament, government, presidential administration,
international organizations, NGO's, universities, and diplomatic missions
to share their experience, views, and ideas. The conference results were
compiled for future distribution. After completing this project, Cholponkulova,
along with Association of Independent Scientists-Lawyers of Kyrgyzstan,
established the Center of Civil Initiative in order to continue the development
of civil rights in the decision-making processes in the parliament and
state government.
Timur Turgenbaev, Russia, FSA/Grad 1994, Total Grant $3,800
Research Assistant, "Creditanstalt" Austria Investment Bank, Equities
Department
Organized a three-day seminar "The Economic Crises of Russian and Latin
American Emerging Markets: A Comparative View." Collaboration with US
colleagues included Dr. Werner Baer of University of Illinois and Dr.
Edwin Dolan of American Institute of Business and Economics. This seminar
was held in the National Hotel in Moscow for Muskie/FSA alumni. 100 people
attended.
Olena Dzhedzhora, Ukraine, CDEP 1997, Total Grant: $5,000
Lecturer, Lviv Theological Academy
Published 3,000 copies of the textbook in Ukrainian, "History of European
Civilization" for undergraduate students of the Lviv Theological Academy.
The publishing house reprinted 5,000 more copies of the book with their
own money, and this second circulation also sold out.
Vasyl Gorbachuk, Ukraine, Ben Franklin 1992, Total Grant: $1,900
Adjunct faculty member, Kyiv Politechnical Institute and Kyiv Mohila
Academy, and Editor and Chief of "Ukrainian Economic Review"
Published 1,500 copies of his textbook entitled, "Macroeconomic Methods"
in Ukrainian. He is using the textbook with his students and is disseminating
it to university libraries across Ukraine.
Anna Gonorskaya, Uzbekistan, CI 1998, Total Grant: $4,900
Chief Administrator, Open Society Institute
Published a manual "Administrative and Financial Management Manual for
Non-profit and Non-Governmental Organizations in Uzbekistan." The manual
includes materials that have not been included in previous publications.
NGO leaders and managers, scholars in the social sciences, researchers,
donors, public officials and businessmen collaborating with NGOs, will
use Gonorskaya's manual. The dissemination of this knowledge in the field
of NGO management will assist in NGO development in Uzbekistan. 500 copies
were distributed to IREX alumni, NGOs, SOROS, CounterPart Consortium,
and the Association of Accountants and Auditors of Uzbekistan.
