CONTENTS:
The Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA), together with the International Research & Exchanges Board (IREX), is pleased to provide a directory of ECA Alumni Small Grant recipients and their projects from the February 1999 competition. One of the primary objectives of academic exchange programs is to strengthen civil society and provide participants and alumni with the expertise and resources needed for democratic and economic development.
Of the over 340 proposals submitted this round, 114 were carefully selected by a bi-national panel of experts in each country. Grant amounts ranged from $90 to $5,000 and an average of 42 percent of the total project costs were cost-shared by the recipients and/or their institutions.
Alumni from the following ECA programs were eligible to apply for a Alumni Small Grant in the February 1999 competition:
- The Curriculum Development Exchange Program (CDEP)
- The Curriculum Consultant Exchange Program (CCEP)
- The Edmund S. Muskie Graduate Fellowship Program (Muskie)
- The Freedom Support Act Graduate Fellowship Program (FSA/Grad)
- The Benjamin Franklin Fellowship Program (BFF)
- The Freedom Support Act Fellowships in Contemporary Issues Program (CI)
- The Regional Scholar Exchange Program (RSEP) [NIS only]
During the February 1999 round, the ECA Alumni Small Grants Program allowed alumni to do the following:
- Create websites
- Organize training programs or conferences for other alumni and ECA constituencies
- Attend conferences in the NIS or Baltics region
- Publish materials; extend memberships to professional organizations relative to their fields
- Purchase modems to allow for greater access to information and colleagues abroad
- Make research trips in the NIS or Baltics region
- Fund travel to the NIS or Baltics region for US colleagues for conferences, professional consultations or collaborative research projects
- Conduct other projects judged to be in the interest of the program goals by the selection committee and/or ECA.
Through innovative and responsive alumni-driven programming, ECA and IREX are multiplying the impact of knowledge and expertise acquired in the US and enabling alumni to directly benefit their local colleagues and neighbors. As demonstrated by the enclosed list of projects, the investment in each of these program participants continues to bring enormous returns for them personally and for their countries.
