Alexander Kurenkov at the Whitman-Walker Clinic
Alexander Kurenkov is a doctor who runs a medical clinic in Ryazan, Russia.
As a USRVI volunteer, he had the opportunity to increase his knowledge
of public health, by working with the Whitman-Walker Clinic, one of the
nation’s leading HIV/AIDS service providers. He assisted in different
areas of the clinic’s operation, providing administrative support
to the Volunteer Resources Department, traveling with an HIV mobile testing
unit to marginalized neighborhoods of Washington DC, assisting in providing
medical service to people living with HIV/AIDS and getting involved in
the organization’s fundraising efforts. He said, “This was
an amazing educational experience. Whitman-Walker was a very useful host
organization because they are running projects that I want to reproduce
at my clinic.” Alexander will use the techniques he learned in the
US to create the first dedicated HIV/AIDS hotline in Ryazan and to rganize
an NGO to educate the city about public health issues.
