Very rarely have social scientists examined these countries as cases of regime transition, whether as individual case studies or within crossnational comparative analyses. There is a need to analyze, in a broad and comparative perspective, the larger processes that have occurred there in recent years in order to understand the context in which phenomena like nationalism, ethnic conflict, state disintegration, and war occurred.
