As Program Officer at the Men’s Forum on Gender in Harare, Nixon Nembaware works to create a movement of young men in Zimbabwe who strive for a gender-just society. He is specifically responsible for facilitating trainings, increasing stakeholder awareness, and monitoring and evaluating the project. In 2012, Nixon was honored as a Rotary Peace Fellow [8]and attended the International Christian University in Tokyo, Japan to attain his Master's degree in Peace and Conflict Resolution.
During his CSP fellowship, Nixon worked with the Women’s Crisis Support Team [9] in Grants Pass, Oregon, facilitating an anti-violence program for high school-aged students aimed at building healthy communities and stopping violence.
Upon returning to Zimbabwe, Nixon implemented his follow-on project which aimed to honor and raise awareness of women who were killed in acts of domestic violence. The project used funding from Oxfam Australia through its Combined Gender HIV and AIDS program budget for community awareness programs that target Epworth, a low income neighborhood of Harare. The program used recycled shipping drums as rubbish bins with signs that said “throw away male violence on women”. Two-hundred bins were placed near male-centered gathering spots to promote both clean environment and an end to gender-based violence. In addition, two discussion forums were held with 60 men from the area and 17 workers from the Epworth local board.
