Chaithri Ranatunge is a consultant for Ryerson University, where she conducts field-based research on domestic violence in Sri Lanka.
While in the U.S., Chaithri worked at Monsoon United Asian Women of Iowa [7] learning how to provide services to domestic abuse survivors while developing an English language tool for advocates to use while carrying out their community outreach.
After returning to Sri Lanka, Chaithri's focused on collecting data on domestic violence. The research revealed the need for more knowledgeable interveners and the possibility of using existing community support structures to counsel married couples on maintaining a healthy relationship. The research also resulted in an increase in the discourse among community members around the issue of abuse, enabling them to discuss some of the deeper impacts it has in their communities.
