Bill manages the media component of the USAID-funded Civil Society and Media Leadership Program in Liberia [5].
The project builds the professional capacity of the media in post-war Liberia, helps media outlets develop sustainable business models, expands the reach and enriches the content of community radio stations in seven of Liberia’s 15 counties, and helps community radio stations develop innovative fund raising models to enable their survival beyond the NGO cycle. The project also develops a comprehensive strategy on advancing women in the media. Bill is also working on developing a program that would utilize SMS technology to improve people’s participation in the formulation of government policies.
Bill has been with IREX since March, 2010. Previously, he spent 10 years working for CNN, including five years as head of the team that produced CNN’s award- winning program, Inside Africa. In 2006, he moved to CNN’s global newsroom producing some of the network’s signature shows. He left CNN in 2008 to work as an independent media consultant, working primarily on helping to rehabilitate the media in Liberia.
He received an MA in Journalism and Public Affairs from American University in Washington, and a BA in Mass Communications from the University of Liberia.
Bill hates collard greens and loves the Atlanta Falcons, Washington Redskins, Liberia’s Invincible Eleven, and the sound of the Liberian rain pelting the roof at night.
