As Program Manager on the Technical Assistance to Regional Study and Resource Centers Program in Namibia, Alex manages the technology aspects that allow communities to access IT resources and training at new regional library centers. This project is a partnership with the Namibian National Library and Archive Services and is funded by the Millennium Challenge Account in Namibia.
Prior to working in Namibia, Alex was the Chief Information Officer of the IREX Ukraine office working on the Bibliomist project. As part of this project, over one-thousand libraries are being equipped with technology so that citizens have better access to information, and over three thousand librarians are
being trained to provide better services. Bibliomist is a part of the Global Libraries [6] initiative funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
Prior to joining IREX, Alex worked as a campus coordinator for the Peace Corps and taught Astronomy 101 while in grad school. He served as an IT and education volunteer with the Peace Corps in Namibia.
Alex holds a BS in physics from the University of Illinois, and an MS from the University of Michigan. He focused on information and communication technologies for development (ICT4D).
Alex was on a team that developed an award winning iPhone app called Zydeco, now used in school systems in 3 states. Students work in teams on a scavenger hunt to collect and build a perfect virtual dinosaur while on field trips to museums.
