UNSCR 1325
This October, 2010, IREX would like to congratulate female peacemakers throughout the world and joins them in observing the 10th anniversary of the UN Security Council Resolution 1325 [8] on women, peace and security. The Resolution calls for the international community to address the different impacts of conflict on women and men, and to engage women in decision making processes of conflict resolution and peacebuilding. IREX recognizes the significance of this historic occasion, and is proud to highlight the contributions of female peacemakers.
To mark the anniversary, Cerue Garlo [9], IREX Program Officer for the Civil Society and Media Leadership Program (CSML) in Liberia [10], will join other female activists who will share experiences and accomplishments in peacemaking at the “Women Preventing War & Promoting Peace Fair [11],” hosted by Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), the US and Norwegian missions to United Nations in New York, and at “Women and War [12],” hosted by the US Institute of Peace in Washington, DC. Cerue has been recognized for her efforts to stop civil war in Liberia throughout the 1990’s and early 2000’s. She will also present research on women in conflict zones which has been included in “What the Women Say: Participation and the UNSCR 1325, An Independent Assessment” to be launched this month in New York.
