April 25th is Girls in ICT Day, and the Beyond Access [5] Team is excited to join the conversation and highlight the vital role of libraries in promoting ICT use among girls. Below, we’ve gathered some great resources and events to help you get involved. Stay tuned for more from Beyond Access on how libraries can use ICT to empower women and girls.
Live Streams:
• Women 2020 [6]. The Secretary General of the International Telecommunication Union will address a panel session on Women in STEM for Smart Growth. Women 2020 is a partnership of European public- and private-sector organizations that addresses STEM education and careers, youth employment, and more. You can watch a live stream of the event here [7].
• European Commission and Parliament [8]. The European Commission and Parliament are hosting a full-day program, including a Parliamentary Hearing. As part of the program, the Parliament will host a debate on women in ICT. A live stream of the debate will be available here [9]on April 25 beginning at 3 p.m. Central European Summer Time (GMT +2.)
Resources:
• ITU [10]has a great collection of statistics, including data and charts about gender and ICT use in more than 50 countries. On the ITU YouTube [11] page, you’ll find videos about girls in ICT around the world, including videos on Kyrgyzstan, Senegal, Honduras, and Malaysia, along with many others.
• GirlsinICT.org [12] See their events [13] page for a full list of events, which are taking place in Uganda, Peru, Nepal, India, Senegal, and more. The website also compiles resources, training materials, and information on opportunities for girls and young women seeking careers in ICT.
• Telecentre Women [14] offers success stories, partnership ideas, and a great section of resources. There, you can find training materials, such as tools to promote the livelihoods of rural women through ICTs, and access to Telecentre.org’s comprehensive, multi-lingual online library of ICT4D resources.
