Recently, we hosted a delegation of educators from northwestern China. The High School attached to Northwest Normal University [9] is one of the high schools in which IREX is implementing a student journalism program [10].
Traditional publications in Chinese high schools more closely resemble academic or literary journals. This newspaper is one of the first of its kind to cover issues affecting students’ lives. The paper serves as a valuable resource for youth in the school community, "giving voice to the voiceless", as one student describes.
The Chinese delegation toured American high schools with nationally recognized newspapers journalism programs. They were inspired by what they saw and one principal even commented, "so this is how a student newspaper production room should look like."
