Last week, 74 teachers from 15 countries around the world gathered in Washington DC for the International Leaders in Education Program (ILEP) [26].
Initiated in 2005, ILEP brings outstanding secondary school teachers from around the world to the United States to further develop their expertise in their teaching areas, enhance their teaching skills, and increase their knowledge about the US. Fellows are based at a US university for the duration of the five-month program.
During the three-day Welcome Program, Fellows participated in training sessions on Cross-Cultural Communication, Service Learning, and Foundations of the US Education System. Fellows were also treated to welcome remarks from Deputy Assistant Secretary for Academic Programs Alina Romanowski [27] on behalf of the US Department of State.
At their host universities, Fellows will take part in a customized academic seminar and technology training, audit graduate-level courses, and participate in an internship in a US secondary school classroom.
