Sam Muhumuza
Sam Muhumuza works with the Development Foundation for Rural Areas to mitigate the violence and conflict that often result from land disputes. He provides economic opportunities to young farmers, advocates for land rights, and educates communities on land policies and reforms.
While in the U.S., Sam worked with two advocacy organizations, Family Equality Council and Human Rights Campaign, leveraging community organizing skills and practices, such as canvassing and petitioning, to ensure respect for minority rights.
Upon returning to Uganda, Sam has implemented his follow-on project aiming to promote dialogue and the exchange of information among minority groups and the larger community through radio programs, newspaper articles and blog posts. He has held a series of informational meetings with local leaders, highlighting minority groups and their issues affecting them and encouraging leaders to take part in monthly radio programs. Supported by The Civil Society Coalition on Human Rights and Constitutional Law and the Human rights Centre of Uganda, the project enlisted eight organizations to advocate for and educate communities in Fort-Portal, Uganda on minority rights, and referred 18 individuals who were members of minority groups to service providers to help them overcome their challenges.
