Gilbert Makore
As Project Coordinator at the Zimbabwe Environmental Law Association, Gilbert Makore works on the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative, designed to educate the public on environmental, economic, social, and cultural rights; reimage transparency and accountability to local officials; and make all mining contracts public.
While in the U.S., Gilbert worked with Pacific Environment in Anchorage, Alaska, conducting research and assessments on the threats and impacts of extractive industries in the state.
Upon returning to Zimbabwe, Gilbert began implementing his follow-on project which aimed at tackling the transparency and accountability challenges of the extractive industries sector. Thus far, three community workshops have been held, three online newsletters have been disseminated and the design of an online portal for relavant news and information conceptualized. Fifteen members of the civil society sector have participated in the community workshops and over 500 people have been reached through the project’s newsletters.
